Electrochemical energy devices such as fuel cells, secondary batteries and electrolysers are of utmost importance in the sustainable energy systems of tomorrow. This PhD project will focus on neutron scattering techniques for electrochemical applications. This involves ex-situ, in-situ and in-operandi studies of new and improved material and process concepts of model systems as well as complex porous structures. It may involve structural analyses of interfaces between ion conducting polymers and solid electrodes in batteries and fuel cells, catalytic processes and polymer electrolyte interaction at catalysts for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells, composition of metal oxide catalyst in electrolytic process, volume changes and mechanical stresses in intercalating structural battery electrodes and assemblies. The project is multi-disciplinary and close collaborations with PhD students and experts in electrochemical applications as well as neutron scattering techniques is a prerequisite.
This PhD student position is part of SwedNess (www.SwedNess.se), the Swedish national graduate school for neutron scattering where KTH is one of the responsible academic institutions. The school is fully funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF) and aims to educate a new generation of highly skilled neutron experts. Each PhD student is fully funded from the start, including salary and a sufficient running budget. The latter will give the student possibilities to travel to external experiments and to visit international facilities, institutions and conferences.
A suitable background for the project is a master of science in chemical engineering, engineering physics (engineering science), materials engineering or a related field. The project is multi-disciplinary and broad technical background is an advantage. Good oral and written communication skills in English and Swedish are an advantage. The candidate should be highly motivated for doing scientific research and should have well developed analytical and problem solving skills as well as an interest and curiosity for electrochemical applications.
