Organizers' message:

Dear ADOPT members!

Winter is here and in March when the sun returns to the ski slopes we will have the ADOPT winter school again. This time the focus is on Nano- and Bio Photonics and we have 15 lecturers, 5 external to KTH. We will also have a new student/postdoc event – Pecha Kucha! We hope you sign up for that which is a competition including prices!

The event will take place in Romme ski resort in March 22 – 25.  As last time, we will stay in the lodge which also contains a restaurant, bar and a conference room. We have booked 20 rooms each having 3 beds, thus the workshop can accommodate 60 people including speakers. We will handle all registration applications on a first come first serve basis. In case we have too many applications and some groups are overrepresented we will overlook this together with ADOPT “Generals”. The whole stay including ski pass (but not ski rental and drinks) is paid by the ADOPT Linné centre! To avoid “no-turn-ups”, cancelled registrations after registration deadline have to be paid by the research groups.

Pecha Kucha (Japanese) is a presentation methodology in which 20 slides are shown for 20 seconds each, usually seen in a multiple-speaker event called a Pecha Kucha Night (PKN). (source: wikipedia)

Thus, every presentation will take 6 minutes and 40 seconds and has to use the internal power-point slide timer! The presentations will be followed by a questioning/discussion session. We propose that you present your own Linné-related research in this talk. Alternatively you could also present something else in optics and photonics. Depending on the number of participants we will schedule these presentations for the three “tentative“ evening programs. Your presentations will be judged according to certain criteria by a committee who will select the winners, possibly by a final round of presentations.

PhD student Course
As last time the school will entitle you to 2 ECTS credits provided that you follow all lectures, make your “pecha kucha” and answer a collection of questions from all the lecturers (60 % pass limit). Course code: FIO3000

Please fill out the registration form. You may update your registration after submitting the form. Registration and update closes on 2012-02-29 at 3pm. Note that you can indicate roommates for sharing one room; if you leave the field empty we will make the arrangement for you. Indicate also your Pecha Kucha participation (can be entered later), food restrictions and whether you plan to come later/leave earlier etc. A confirmation e-mail will be sent after successful registration.
