Doctoral programs

Welcome to this web page about the graduate studies at the Department of Mathematics, which is a part of the SCI school at KTH.

The content of the graduate programs

There are two graduate programs at the Department of Mathematics. The division of Mathematics offers the program Mathematics. The divisions Mathematical statistics, Numerical analysis, and Optimization and systems theory together offer the program Applied and Computational Mathematics.

The length of the programs is four years (240 ECTS). Most graduate students have departmental duties such as teaching which extends the time to five years. The graduate studies comprise courses and independent research, and they are concluded by a written thesis.

Program syllabi

The content of the programs is described in the program syllabi. They can be found here (swedish only):

Courses

Part of the graduate studies are courses on advanced (master) and graduate level:

Seminars

The research seminars at the department are an important part of the graduate education. There are seminars for each research group, and the speakers are often international guests. There is also a graduate student seminar, where the graduate students present their research for each other.

Individual study plans

The supervisors and the graduate student together formulate individual study plans for each year. These study plans describe the work of the graduate student in the form of courses, research projects, etc., and the development of the graduate student in relation to the goals of the program.

Information for present graduate students

Further information can be found on the main page on graduate studies at the SCI school. This web page provides information on recognition of courses from other universities, registration and time plan for Ph.D. defences, etc.

How to become a graduate student

Openings in the graduate student education at the Department of Mathematics are announced as graduate student positions. These announcements are usually made in the second half of the spring semester. Within Applied and Computational Mathematics there can be cooperations with industry. When available information will appear on this page.
