Degree Ordinance, general

Since July 1st 2007 higher education in Sweden has gone through an important reform of a new structure for educational programmes and degrees.

• All higher education – single subject courses as well as programmes is structured into three distinct cycles; first-, second- and third cycle.

• New degrees, corresponding to the cycle of education, and with new requirements have been introduced.

• The extent of your studies is stated in credits ("högskolepoäng, hp"). 1,5 credit equals to one week of full time studies. The system is compatible with ECTS credits so that one year of full time studies renders 60 credits which equal to 60 ECTS credits.

Active students registered before July 1st 2007 have in some cases, the opportunity to choose between a degree according to the old ordinance (degree ordinance of 1993) or a degree according to the new ordinance (degree ordinance of 2007).

1. The Ordinance entered into force on 1 May 2007. Unless otherwise stated in point 3 or 4, the Ordinance are to apply with regard to qualifications in education that are awarded after the end of June 2007.

2. The older provisions are to apply with regard to qualifications in education that are awarded before 1 July 2007.

3. The older provisions are also to apply with regard to qualifications in education that are awarded after the end of June 2007, if all the education covered by the degree was completed before then.

4. A person who has started an educational programme leading to a qualification in education under the older provisions before 1 July 2007 and a person who has been admitted to such a programme before that date but has been allowed to postpone starting the programme until a time after that date is entitled to complete her or his education and obtain a qualification in education under the older provisions, though until no later than the end of June 2015.

5. The scope of a qualification in education that under points 3 and 4 may be taken under the older provisions after the end of June 2007, is to be given in credits according to the older provisions. The degree certificate issued for a qualification in education referred to in point 4 is also to indicate the corresponding scope of the qualification in credits in accordance with what is stated in point 6 of the entry-into-force and transitional provisions in the Ordinance (2006:1053) concerning amendment of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100).
