It is possible to study for several years without knowing a lot about what you will actually work with in the future. It is often about beginning to do your own research about the profession and what companies might suit you. Here are some suggestions on how you can get started.

How do I find out more about the professional role of an engineer?

  • Begin by choosing 3-5 companies that you are curious about and reading up on them on their websites, etc. Think about what it is that you want to know more about and what is unclear and continue seeking answers to these questions.
  • Read the companies’ job ads. They often provide a good picture of what one can work with and what the companies need in terms of competence. Find ads on the companies’ websites.
  • Think about whether you know an engineer and ask for an interview.
  • Already join the alumni network during your studies. You can then get in touch with alumni who are out in working life and participate in lectures and events where you meet alumni.

KTH Career Survey 2018

In the spring of 2018, KTH conducted a survey directed to all alumni of the undergraduate and graduate levels who had graduated in 2013, 2014 and 2015. A total of 7808 alumni were included in the survey. The response rate was 43,1 %. 

The survey shows that a KTH degree is an entry point to employment, relevant tasks and a relatively high salary. Despite the turbulent economy, 97 percent of the graduates found employment after graduating. A large percentage of the latter, however, have left Sweden and thus operate on different labour markets, and a high proportion of those who remain in Sweden are engaged in PhD studies.

Of the alumni with a Master of Science in Engineering 89 percent had a permanent employment and 83 percent of the alumni with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

The graduates primarily found employment thanks to contact with employers, personal networks through job advertisements and their individual degree projects. 

Two percent of the alumni stated that they are unemployed and three percent stated that they have their own business. 20 percent of the non-Swedish citizens stated that they are doing postgraduate studies.

Consultancy companies, research and technology-intensive industry, infrastructure services and research/teaching mainly employ the alumni.  

16 percent of the alumni have a management position and 54 percent is a project manager or has a supervising position. 41 percent have a salary between 35000 and 44990 Swedish crowns per month. 23 percent have a salary between 25000 and 34999 Swedish crowns per month.

20 percent of the non-Swedish citizens have obtained a management position, which is a higher proportion than those born in Sweden to Swedish parents. In particular, those who have completed a five-year programme of Architecture have reached supervisory, project management or managerial positions.

Those who completed a five-year programme have the highest wages. Swedish citizens earn more than non-Swedish citizens. This is largely associated with the fact that a high percentage of the latter work abroad and that wage levels are slightly higher in Sweden than abroad.

In practice, it is primarily the non-Swedish citizens who are active on the international labour market. 30 percent of the total population believe that studying abroad was an advantage when they obtained their current job. The results of this survey clearly indicate that the graduates found employment in the areas for which they are educated. A clear majority of the alumni feel that their education is of great relevance in their daily work and that their education has enabled them to reach the skills required for their current post.
The alumni are particularly satisfied with their education when it comes to: 

  • making written and oral presentations
  • solving problems independently
  • working in a team/cooperating with others 
  • following knowledge developments in their professional area 
  • improving knowledge in their subject/scientific background and methods
  • thinking critically
  • opportunities on the international labour market.
