Rustam Nabiev – 2021 recipient of the KTH Innovation Award
From civil war in Tajikistan, to a Master at KTH, and on to a life devoted to fulfilling the mission: “A day when no mother or child dies or suffers from preventable diseases". In July, 2021, Rustam Nabiev received the first KTH Innovation Award. Hear his story on November 17.

Rustam Nabiev received the KTH Innovation Award for taking on the enormous challenge that no mother or child shall die or suffer from preventable diseases, and his creativity, grit and courage in implementing the solution with the people who need it the most.
Rustam grew up in Tajikistan, where he experienced the effects of civil war. After the war, he began his studies in computer science and later came to Sweden to study a Master’s degree at KTH.
At KTH, he learned about eHealth and decided to devote his life to health care and innovative eHealth solutions. After working as a research assistant at KTH and Karolinska Institutet and doing field work in Africa, Rustam co-founded the organization Shifo to work towards the vision “A day when no mother or child dies or suffers from preventable diseases”.

Shifo
Shifo is a non-profit organization using technology to prevent children in developing countries from dying from preventable diseases.
They help local healthcare workers to register each child and give children access to preventative health care like vaccines. They have registered over 900 000 children and fully immunized over 180 000 children.
The KTH Innovation Award
The KTH Innovation Award aims to celebrate people from KTH who with creativity, grit and courage have contributed to solving society’s challenges with innovation. The Award was founded in 2020 and made possible by donations from Mathias Uhlén, professor at KTH and Spotify founder and CEO Daniel Ek. The monetary award is 500 000 SEK. The nomination process for the 2022 award opens in early 2022.
