Programme syllabus and course syllabus

The programme syllabus and course syllabus determine the structure of the educational programme. A student admitted to KTH has the right to receive an education as specified in the programme syllabus and course syllabus.

Programme Syllabus

There must be a syllabus for each programme. In the programme syllabus the courses included in the programme are stated as well as the various prerequisites and other conditions that apply. Decisions of changes within the syllabus are taken by the undergraduate executive of each School at KTH.

Course Syllabus

Official course syllabuses at KTH must contain the following information: course code, title of the course in Swedish and English, number of higher education credits, grading scale, educational cycle, main field of study, intended learning outcomes, main contents, admission requirements, examination and literature.
If information about literature cannot be provided at the time of approving the official course syllabus, it must be stated in the official course syllabus that information about course literature will be provided in a detailed course syllabus (kurs-PM). It will also be stated in the official course syllabus that the language of instruction will be specified in the course offering information, in the course and programme directory.

Examination (qualitative targets), educational and learning objectives for the courses

All higher education is based on qualitative targets that are determined in the Higher Education Ordinance, second attachment, the Degree Ordinance. There are, for example, common goals for all students that study a Master of Science degree in engineering.

At the university, the qualitative targets are specified in the learning objectives, which are the objectives of the programme you are studying at KTH. The educational objectives are specifications of the general qualitative targets, but may not exclude any objective.

All higher education is divided up into courses. For courses that form a part of an educational programme, the student that has achieved all of the course objectives will have achieved the learning objectives. On the other hand, not all learning objectives need to be included in all courses.

Detailed course syllabus (kurs-PM), course web and other information

Before a course starts, the student is also entitled to receive other information. This is often provided in the form of a course-PM, accessible via a course web, or similar. This information is not governing in the same way as the programme and course syllabi are. Examples of such information include:

  • A list of course literature and other materials – available one month prior to the start of the course.
  • The course schedule – available one month prior to the start of the course.
  • The time, date and examination form – available one month prior to the start of the course.
  • Rules for resitting exams – available no later than at the start of the course.
  • The grading criteria – available no later than at the start of the course.
