Deferment of studies

In the event extenuating circumstances arise, a student admitted to an undergraduate programme, a master's programme or a freestanding course may defer the commencement of their studies. Permission for deferment of studies is usually granted for the next time the programme or course is offered.

Reasons for deferment of studies

Deferment of studies may be granted if there are extenuating circumstances. Reasons for deferment of studies or academic leave may entail social, medical or other extenuating circumstances such as:

  • care of child
  • mandatory military service
  • denied leave of absence for studies from your employer

Deferment of studies cannot be granted for reasons concerning housing/accommodation or your current economic situation.

If you are obliged to pay tuition fees you must pay the first instalment of tuition before the deadline in order for your application to be assessed.

Application for deferment of studies

It is not possible to apply for deferment of studies after you have been registered to the programme or course.

You must have been accepted to the programme or course in order to be granted deferment of studies. This means, if required, that you have to accept the offer within the specified deadline in order for your application for deferment of studies to be processed. If you have not accepted your admission offer by the deadline, you will lose your place of study and your application for deferment of studies cannot be processed.

You are required to submit a written statement along with certified documents supporting your reason for deferment. Send your scanned application to  .

If you can't send us your scanned application it is possible to send a hard copy to KTH Admissions Office, BrinellvÀgen 8, SE-100 44 Stockholm, Sweden.
