The Degree Ordinance of 2007

1,5 credit represents one week of full-time study and 60 credits is the equivalent of one academic year of full-time study.

The credit system is compatible with ECTS credits.

First cycle, general degrees

Higher Education Diploma
In order to be entitled to a Higher Education Diploma the following requirements have to be fulfilled: finished courses totalling 120 credits (two years of full time studies), including a major subject of studies totalling 60 credits at a minimum.

Bachelor of Science
In order to be entitled to a Bachelor of Science the following requirements have to be fulfilled: After finishing courses totalling 180 credits (three years of full time studies) the student may be awarded a Bachelor’s degree, provided that a major subject of 90 credits minimum is included, and that within the major subject of studies at least 15 credits constitutes a degree project.
 

Second cycle, general degrees

Master of Science
In the Swedish system there are two cycles of Master degrees. There is the Master of Science (60 credits) and the Master of Sciene (120 credits).

In order to be entitled to a Master of Science (60 credits) the following requirements have to be fulfilled: Finished courses at the second cycle totalling 60 credits (one year of full time studies). Of the courses included 15 credits maximum is allowed to be from the first cycle. Not, however, courses already included in the underlying first cycle degree (i.e degree of Bachelor). In addition to this, a major subject of studies of 30 credits minimum at the second cycle, including a degree project of 15 credits minimum is required.

In order to entitle to a Master of Science (120 credits) the following requirements have to be fulfilled: Finished courses at second cycle totalling 120 credits (two years of full time studies). Of the courses included 30 credits maximum is allowed to be at first cycle. Not, however, courses already included in the underlying first cycle degree (i.e degree of Bachelor). In addition to this, a major subject of studies of 60 credits minimum at second cycle, including a degree project of 30 credits minimum is required.

First- and second cycle, professional degrees

In addition to the general degrees, there are professional degrees, comprising from 180 credits (three years) to 300 credits (five and a half years of full time studies). Unlike the general degrees the vocational/professional degrees at KTH normally require enrolment in a full programme.

KTH award the following professional degrees:

First cycle degree
Bachelor of Science in Engineering 180 credits (three years of full time studies)

Second cycle degrees
Master of Architecture 300 credits (five years of full time studies)
Master of Science in Engineering 300 credits (five years of full time studies)

Third cycle degrees

At third cycle there are two degrees

Licentiate
2 years of full time studies, 120 credits

Doctor (PhD)
4 years of full time studies, 240 credits
