Find a host organisation abroad

When you apply for Field Studies, you will need, among other things, a contact person at a host organisation abroad. There are many different ways to find a host organisation for field studies, for example by reading travel reports, searching among KTH's partner universities, or contacting NGOs and organisations abroad.

Contacts via KTH

One tip is to read the travel reports from previous FS students, as they may have visited an organisation you find interesting. You can contact fs-info@kth.se  if you find a travel report from a student who has been working with an organisation you find interesting, so that we can connect you with the student(s) in question.

Travel reports from field studies

Another tip is to speak with your teachers to see if they have any contacts in the region or country you are interested in that could be relevant to you. They may, for example, be working on a research project together with partners in the region or country in question, and it may be helpful for them to have a student investigate a specific research topic connected to the project.

At the KTH international relations office, we have regional officers working with our partners in Africa, Southeast Asia, Latin America, India, and China who may be able to help you with contacts in the region in question. Send an email to fs-info@kth.se  to contact the regional advisors. State on which programme you are studying, what you want to write your degree project about (subject/project idea), and which country/region(s) you are interested in. Note that our ability to help with contacts depends on which contacts we have in the country/region in question and whether this matches what you would like to write your degree project about. You should contact us well in advance of the field studies application deadline.

KTH's partner universities

Another possibility is to search among KTH’s partner universities in the region you are interested in, since it is often possible to find suitable co-supervisors and contact people for your degree project there. It is advisable to first search for a research group and a professor who shares the same research topic that you would like to develop during your field study. Write an email to the international coordinator/international office of the university and to the professor you would like to serve as the contact person for your field study.

You can also be awarded a scholarship for field studies at KTH's partner universities in sub-Saharan Africa via KTH Global Development Hub.

Contact via other organisations

Some students have found their host organisation with the help of the Swedish embassy in the country; others have contacted an NGO or a company they are interested in, and that has operations in the region or country in question. For example, it is common for students to go to organisations or companies abroad with connections to Sweden.

Before the application opens, you can find project ideas from a few organisations and universities that KTH cooperates with on this webpage. You can also investigate them to see if you find any of them interesting. Send an email to fs-info@kth.se  if you would like to contact one of the organisations. Specify in the email which project you are interested in.
