Bastian comes from Germany. After finishing his Bachelor of Arts in Audiodesign in Berlin, he decided to continue his education at KTH with studies in Interactive Media Technology. He enjoys engaging in discussions with friends, regular climbing and sauna sessions, as well as investigating new ways of interacting.
Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?
I chose this master’s programme because it appears to have a good balance between focusing on research and exploring and improving skills through project-based work.
What are the best aspects of your programme?
The programme contains a broad range of subjects and the course selection can be customised, which allows a stronger focus on our own interests. The fact that the students are from very different backgrounds allows fruitful collaborations on projects and the chance to benefit from each other’s skills.
Another great feature of the Interactive Media Technology studies is our collaborative working space called MIDDLA, which provides various types of equipment such as 3D-printers, laser cutters, soldering stations, electronic components, etc. It is a comfortable space in which everyone can work on projects, receive help from others or just discuss things.
Have you chosen a specialisation track within the programme? If Yes, which track and why?
Within the programme, I have chosen to specialise in the Physical track since it introduced most of the courses about topics that were new to me, such as realising a proper physical device with which users can interact. My aim is to gain a good overview of various different topics through these studies so that I can then choose what I want to focus on.
What are your favourite courses thus far?
Physical Interaction Design and Multimodal Interaction were among my favourite courses since they allowed me to conduct creative research and develop interactive systems. Thus far I have benefited from each course in which I have participated by gaining new inspiration and learning new approaches.
How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?
Compared to my previous studies, I have learnt a lot about deep research and have also worked a lot in teams.
How is student life in Stockholm?
Compared to Berlin, student life in Stockholm is a bit more laid back and it is easy to find many student gatherings and good club nights. You feel safe and welcome here and enjoy the multi-cultural mix of the students. During the summer in particular, there is a relaxed atmosphere all around the city and it appears as if half of the city is enjoying its free time at the sea or the lakes.
How would you describe your time at KTH so far?
During the past year at KTH, I have met interesting people, made great friendships and felt very inspired to be actively researching within my field of interest.
What do you want to do after graduating?
After graduating, I would like to work in a small own designer studio or maybe do a PhD related to interaction design.
What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for their master’s studies?
In my opinion, the range of knowledge in this programme is very broad, which makes it an interesting programme. Also, the topics being taught are relevant and state of the art.
