Ask Eirini questions about KTH and read more about her decision to study at KTH, thoughts about Sweden, advice to prospective students and her plans for the future.
Hej, I am Eirini, and I come from Heraklion, Greece. Currently, I am pursuing my master's programme in Machine Learning at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at KTH. I did my bachelor's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineer (Telecommunications) from Technical University of Crete, Greece. I love travelling, photography, handmade jewellery, and this is how I spent most of my free time.
Why did you choose this master's programme at KTH?
Machine Learning is one of the most competitive programmes worldwide and especially at KTH. That is expected since this university has an outstanding programme full of interesting courses about the field. If you want a specific title as the Machine Learning master's degree, there are not many programmes in Europe that would give you this opportunity.
What are some of your favourite courses so far?
This is not an easy question since there are a lot of courses that I liked! I would strongly recommend the Deep Learning for Data Science course, which was one of my favourites. You will learn different algorithms and architectures, build a real deep network, implement and understand techniques to improve the accuracy of a network, all of which are necessary skills for someone that would like to have a career path in this area. I would also suggest the Artificial Neural Network course to learn about different architectures and techniques for networks. In one of these labs, you will have the chance to implement one paper of the famous researcher Geoffrey Hinton and the Boltzmann machines.
How is student life in Stockholm?
Stockholm is a charming place to live, especially as a student. It has a variety of beautiful museums that you can visit (of course Fotografiska is my favourite one) and many lovely places to eat, drink coffee or go for a beer. Prices can vary according to your needs, and for those who want something close to the campus, a lunch at Nymble restaurant will not disappoint you. Even the last year with the pandemic, everything was well organized on the campus, and you do not have to worry about that since the people are very friendly and responsible. You will have the opportunity to meet students from all over the world, and this is exciting that you will share amazing conversations, tradition, and knowledge. Also, there are a lot of activities on the campus that you could do, such as cycling or swimming. KTH AI Society and even volunteering positions like the Engineers Without Borders can find really interesting projects that would benefit society and you.
What do you want to do after graduating?
The university gives a lot of opportunities for both industry and research. Although being a professor is not in my future plan, I would like to get as good experience as possible in the machine learning industry to do my startup one day! So, my plan would be to either continue to a PhD or work in a promising sector in Artificial Intelligence.
What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for master's studies?
Choosing KTH is something you will not regret! KTH campus is amazing, it has very nice places for you to read as study rooms or labs/classrooms, and each one of them has even a different colour, so you will always feel good and happy to be in these places. The people you meet will end up being good friends to you, and maybe in the future, you will work together in the same lab or company. All of the professors answer questions and emails fast, and you will feel it is like a place where fairness and equality are the most important values. For the projects and labs, I would suggest finding a good team instead of choosing to do the work alone since you will learn from other people and learn from you. Collaboration is an important skill, and teamwork can offer that to you. Last but not least, the quality of the courses is fantastic, and the outcomes you will gain will fill you with confidence and knowledge to succeed in your goals. I wish you all the best, and let the adventure begin!
