Professors are approachable and there is no wall between the lecturers and the students

Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?

During my fourth year in Barcelona I took a healthcare-related track. Thus, when looking for a master’s I searched for a master’s programme that could deepen my specific knowledge of the healthcare sector. Moreover, I was also looking to study abroad, since this has been a dream of mine since I was a child.

What are the best aspect of your programme?

In my opinion the best aspects of MSc in Medical Biotechnology are the autonomy in the course selection and the novelty of the subjects taught. The master has two tracks and there is a huge degree of freedom when selecting the course, you want to take. Moreover, in the course lectures read about novel and actual techniques, with changes from year-to-year or with important updates as the sector changes.

Have you chosen a specialisation track within the programme? If Yes, which track and why?

I have already chosen tracks within the programme, including the Omics and Medical Devices tracks. I have chosen to specialise in medical devices as I have already worked at a hospital that has 3D printing and a research centre with bioprinting techniques to develop stems and other prosthetics. Thus, I am interested in further developing my knowledge of these devices.

What are your favourite courses thus far?

I have enjoyed both the Molecular Biomedicine and the Immunology courses. The first course was in a classroom while the second course was online because of the coronavirus situation. Both courses offered interesting information in an entertaining way.

How does studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?

As said, studies at KTH give you much more independence than my previous studies. I had less hours of lectures per day here than than I usually had in my home university. That does not mean that you do not have to study or work at all. But it is true that this system offers you more freedom or autonomy as you have to organise yourself, letting you to plan other cool things such as meeting friends, participating of KTH or THS organisations, going to the gym or so on.

How is student life in Stockholm?

Stockholm has a very active student life. You can meet friends at the weekends and visit night clubs. However, Stockholm offers a lot more to students: huge parks and lakes where you can spend time with friends, a multicultural population, wonderful museums, a Viking history background, student sports teams and a university league, as well as different student associations and competitions.

How would you describe your time at KTH so far?

I would describe KTH as an autonomous and egalitarian university. Let me explain it, as said earlier it is your own responsibility how you manage your time between lectures and during the course. You are encouraged to ask doubts and do your research. Professors are approachable and there is no wall between the lecturers and the students. I feel like it is a great system.

What do you want to do after graduating?

I’m not sure what I’m going to do after I graduate. I have considered Healthcare consulting or other roles in the commercial biotechnology sector. However, I have also thought about doing a PhD. So, I have not decided yet which path to take.

What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for their master’s studies?

I have applied and been accepted for other master’s programme at other universities. Nevertheless, I do not regret choosing KTH. I have met extraordinary people here. I have developed skills I have never thought about. And I have become more of what I wanted to be. KTH is ranked 98^th in the university rankings. This is not the best ranking in the world. However, I cannot imagine having similar experiences at any other university. KTH balances both student life and education. KTH has the perfect measure, lagom.
