Carlo is now part of one of the biggest developments in the Stockholm region

Carlo works at a Project Engineer at Skanska and is an alumnus of the master’s programme in Real Estate and Construction Management at KTH.

What made you decide to start studying at KTH?

There are certainly both rational and emotional reasons. The rational reasons are based on the opportunity I got from HafenCity University in Hamburg to be able to be part of KTH as an exchange student to begin with and its gigantic possibilities. I felt excited to be part of a great international institution that allowed me to study in English and a vast variety of stimulating courses within the built environment. The emotional aspects included the setting of KTH with its beautiful campus in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

What do you see as the greatest aspects of your programme?

The Real Estate and Construction Management programme appealed to me the first second I was introduced to it. Its great flexibility is definitely a big plus. The professionalism of a great number of professors with different backgrounds gives each student the chance to develop the way he/she need and wants to fulfill professional dreams. The fact that the programme was awarded a RICS accreditation in 2015 underlines that the programme answers to the highest standards in real estate education. Generally small classes and a personal dialogue with professors deliver fantastic opportunities for the personal development of students.

What does your current job involve?

My current job as a project engineer at Skanska involves a vast variety of tasks and responsibilities that we get a first glimpse for at KTH. I am currently encouraged to be part of one of our biggest developments in the Stockholm region, the development of a new district that includes commercial, residential and infrastructural construction. There is a whole chain of actors that I deal with daily in a cultural, contractual, economical and juridical way: The final customer and investor, the project developer, our project management team with support functions, the subcontractors and suppliers. This shows once again the versatility of working with the built environment.

How do you use the knowledge and skills you gained during your degree?

More important than “how” is the fact that I am using quite a lot of skills from my KTH degree. The Master’s programme prepares you in a successful way by giving you a great overview in many different areas. The research especially regarding several innovative solutions has reached a good step into the future. KTH gives students the opportunity to achieve a full package of knowledge and skills to put your professional purpose into practice.

What kind of career opportunities are available in your field?

Life is full of opportunities and following one of KTH:s slogans “the future starts here” – nothing is impossible. The variety of jobs after this master’s programme is incredible. Seeing these wonderful companies my friends are working for these days evokes pride. Everything from daily construction management, other technical consultant firms, architectural firms or development companies, my former colleagues are involved in banks, pension funds, insurance companies, agencies, appraisal and property management firms.
