Why did you apply to KTH?

After carefully comparing the strengths of many universities, I found that KTH is one of the world leaders in technology with a ranking of 13th among the world's technical universities. I believe that the high reputation of the university would be undoubtedly helpful for me in my future career.

Secondly, not only could I achieve my academic goals, but also there would be a great benefit for my outlook on life and values since KTH would expose me to a diverse culture. I had experienced studying in Denmark before; I couldn't say no to the magnificent landscape and high standard of the social system in the Nordic countries. So I managed to continue my adventure in Stockholm, the capital of Scandinavia. My studies at KTH have truly broadened my horizon.

What is your best tip for a new master's student?

For new international students, especially for a Chinese student, I would like to mention that do not be afraid to speak English. People in Sweden are extremely friendly, and most of them are good at English. It is not difficult to make friends at the university since you have a lot of group work and presentations, which would be an excellent opportunity for you to practice speaking English in front of people.

Secondly, there are many introduction activities arranged by the student union at the beginning of the academic year. During the whole study year, the Academic Resource Center (ARC) will organise various lunch seminars which are designed to present practical tips regarding your study and life at KTH. I suggest you join both as often as you can. It is a good place for you to meet new friends and get into the Swedish way of life.

What are your impressions of Stockholm and Sweden?

Stockholm is awesome! There are countless unforgettable impressions for me. One is the clean streets and the fresh air. A large number of citizens are jogging in the city every day due to the great environment. Swedes really care about protecting the old buildings - the old town in Stockholm being a great example. The change of the Royal Guard is still taken place every day all around the year at the royal castle. Furthermore, Swedes still keep many traditional festivals, such as Valborg, mid-summer celebrations and Santa Lucia.

Is there something about life in Stockholm and Sweden that has surprised you?

First of all, I am surprised that Sweden has such an excellent public transport system. Secondly, you always need to prepare for the unpredictable weather which could be shifting suddenly without warning. Lastly, seeing the aurora will be one of the most memorable experiences in my entire life. If you are lucky, you could encounter it even in Stockholm.

Do you have a place in the city that you enjoy spending time at?

I have to say that anywhere in Stockholm is super nice during summertime due to its great proximity to water. I really enjoy running in the forest where you can encounter deers, rabbits and even foxes. Espresso House is a quite popular cosy café to meet friends where you could spend 'fika' time.

Are you taking part in any student activities?

I have been engaged in the project of Student Noble Nightcap as a construction coordinator. Students' Nobel Nightcap is one of the biggest student parties that picks up where the Nobel banquet ends. Nobel laureates can relax and spend an evening in the company of Stockholm's students. If you decide to come to study in Stockholm, do not hesitate to join this event to meet new friends and get an opportunity to meet Noble laureates.

What do you do in your spare time?

Perhaps influenced by the Swedes, I have started exercising a lot. I usually go for a run and swim. Besides that, I am interested in exploring new places and photography since the magnificent landscape in Sweden keeps driving me to do so.

How do you keep in touch with your family and friends from home?

Nowadays, it is common to use Skype to call family and friends at home. I usually have a video chat with my mom once a week.

What do you want to do after you have received your degree here at KTH?

The future is always hard to predict. So far, staying in Sweden after graduation is part of my plan. I expect to work at a real estate consultancy agency where I could help people from China who wants to invest in property in Sweden.

Is there any advice you would like to give others that will live in Stockholm and study at KTH in the future?

Life during winter is not easy! And keep your eyes on what kind of activities are going on at KTH as well as in the city - be active to engage yourself into the Swedish society!
