Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?

Working as a safety engineer after graduating from my bachelor’s studies has aroused my curiosity and increased my interest in safety and work environment disciplines. I knew at the time that I needed to dig deeper, not only on the practical side of these disciplines but also on the theoretical side. I wanted to know more about safety as a science. When I came across this programme at KTH and I read its description and the course syllabus, I was quite sure that this programme would satisfy my curiosity and give me what I was looking for, in the knowledge that KTH is one of the few institutions in the world to provide this unique master’s programme aimed at specialised engineers who can contribute to creating sustainable work environments. It was important for me to complete my post-graduate studies at a research-intensive university of technology that is highly attractive to reputable researchers.

What are the best aspects of your programme?

This master’s programme has many interesting aspects. One of these aspects is its aim to broaden the students’ understanding of approaches to safety from a wider perspective, such as the socio-technical and HTO perspective. This offers students the sufficient knowledge to provide comprehensive measures and solutions for enhancing the work environment in different fields of work. Another aspect is the close collaboration with the specialists from the Swedish Work Environment Authority and the Swedish market. This collaboration can create a bridge for the students that connects the theoretical knowledge gained with real-world practical applications. It is interesting to note that the faculty members are always keen to keep the programme updated with new trends in the disciplines of safety and ergonomics.

Have you chosen a specialisation track within the programme? If Yes, which track and why?

Not really. The courses that you choose to take are what defines your track. For me, the courses I took are more of a Work Environment Engineering (WEE) track. However, I also took courses from the other track, Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE). The courses from the HFE track are very interesting and important, even for a work environment engineer. The flexibility in choosing the courses is beneficial to building your knowledge and discovering your interests.

What are your favourite courses thus far?

This is a difficult question to answer because I have really enjoyed all the courses I have taken thus far. However, I would say that my favourite courses have been System Safety and Risk Management, Evaluation and Measures of the Acoustic Work Environment and Vibrations, Evaluation and Measures of the Physical and Chemical Work Environment and Ergonomics for the Prevention of Musculoskeletal Disorders.

How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?

I finished my previous studies six years ago, but I can say that my learning experience at KTH is different. The studies at KTH are more connected to real-world applications. Also, the education system at KTH creates more opportunities for innovation and creativity as it mostly depends on encouraging students to form their own reflections and perceptions about the study topics.

How is student life in Stockholm?

It is amazing! There is a lot to do in Stockholm as a student, starting with participating in entertainment activities to attending educational events. In Stockholm, you get the chance to experience the real meaning of cultural diversity, by meeting Swedish students as well as international students from different parts of the world, either in your programme or in the dorms. When talking about life in Stockholm, I have to mention the charming nature, which you can enjoy even from your window, and the fascinating historical buildings and museums.

How would you describe your time at KTH so far?

It has been a fruitful time. Besides academic knowledge, I am also exploring my potential and skills. I know that my experience at KTH will have a long-lasting and positive effect on my personality and life.

What do you want to do after graduating?

I would like to contribute to the evolution of safety and ergonomics as a science. Thus, my next goals are to work in an organisation that has an R&D department that focuses on safety and ergonomics and pursue my Ph.D in ergonomic risk assessment methods/tools for the industrial sector.

What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for their master’s studies?

It will be one of the best choices of your life! You will be satisfied to receive your post-graduate education from one of the top 100 universities in the world. Alongside the learning experience, you will enjoy being in a country that combines technical development, nature, history and fun in the same place.
