Yu got a One-Year Scholarship to study at KTH

Yu comes from China. In his third year of undergraduate studies, he came to Sweden through the joint education programme between his bachelor's university and KTH. He later graduated with a bachelor's in Civil Engineering from Beijing Jiaotong University.

You were awarded the KTH One-Year Scholarship for your second year.
What has this scholarship meant for you?

It's my first time living outside my home country, and keeping a study-life balance in an extremely unfamiliar environment is challenging but exciting. By receiving this scholarship, I am not only able to reduce my financial stress but also demonstrate to my family that I can adjust to life in Sweden.

What was your academic or professional background before applying for the scholarship?
In my third year of undergraduate studies, I was admitted to KTH through the joint education programme between my bachelor's university and KTH. Having received satisfactory grades from KTH in my first year, I got my bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Beijing Jiaotong University

Do you have any recommendations for students applying for the One-Year Scholarship?
The grades you get in your first year determine your eligibility for this scholarship. Therefore, if you wish to apply for it, I recommend studying hard for every course you have. Though grades don't necessarily represent learning, you can always learn more while striving for ideal grades. Make sure you keep a positive attitude while you study and try to enjoy the process during each course.

What are the best aspects of your programme and your school?
My master's programme is in Transport and Geoinformation Technology. This is an interdisciplinary major that students from diverse backgrounds can pursue. The best aspects of my programme are its comprehensiveness and practicality. You can experience how to manage and optimize the public transport system or explore the potential relationships between different attributes within an area on Google Map Cloud. In every course, you will find helpful labs that will encourage you to develop your own programs and learn skills outside of the classroom.

What would you say to a student applying for your programme?
Traditional infrastructure and geographic information technology are both going through a revolution of the information age. There is infinite information available to examine difficulties we never imagined and find solutions with all kinds of advanced technology. It's always exciting to discover something new that nobody has seen before and contribute to a more sustainable society. And finally, Sweden is a beautiful country to live in. Take some time to run in the forest and hike by lakes; it will be a precious memory for you.
