We are happy to welcome Arben Merkoçi to give a talk with the following abstract:

The urgent problems facing public health and environment in the 21st are showing that diagnostics is one of the weakest points in the cascade of various measurements and decisions to be taken. An efficient treatment of human diseases or polluted environment is strongly related to diagnostics. While conventional laboratories are very important the use of point-of-care (POC) diagnostics is a MUST overall for places with low resources, extreme conditions and many more. The current COVID19 pandemics is again demonstrating the importance of POC devices to be used in large scale and frequently by all citizens around the world. Although the progress of biosensors in the last decades there is still a high demand to improve existing devices or design and fabricate new ones addressing new applications for different clinical or environment scenarios. In this context the use of nanomaterials and nanotechnologies is becoming pivotal to build nanobiosensors as diagnostic devices with better performance. I will show some examples of how we integrate nanomaterials such as nanoparticles or graphene into biosensing platforms using sustainable materials such as paper and applying simple printing/stamping technologies. We are very much concerned about these devices to fulfil the WHO REASSURED criteria: Real-time connectivity, Easy of specimen collection, Affordable, Sensitive, Specific, User-friendly, Rapid and robust, Equipment free and Deliverable to end-users. I will show how we design, fabricate, characterise, connect if necessary with smartphone and apply these nanobiosensors in various settings through interesting applications related to detection of some clinical biomarkers or contaminants all of extreme importance for diagnostics, environment control, safety and security.
