Swelling of cellulose fibrillar matrices and gels
The project aims to investigate and determine the swelling behavior of the cellulose fibre wall in contact with aqueous media. Focus will be on understanding the contribution from different non-ionic factors and proposing a new theoretical model for the swelling kinetics and equilibrium. To achieve this goal the complex structure in the fibre wall will be studied at different structural levels to connect the thermodynamics of the cellulose-water interaction in those to the continuous fibre wall structure. For each structural level a well characterized model system and robust measuring techniques will be used.
