Biobased polymers and composites
The research focuses on polymeric materials science and technology with a special emphasis on biobased polymers and composites, from nano to macro scale. I am especially interested in polymeric materials from biomass and their components, their processing, modification and characterization to design sustainable materials and composites to be used as an alternative to the traditional petroleum-based polymers. The objective is to design competitive and truly sustainable materials, able to close their lifecycle without any environmental hazard from its origin to its disposal. In this sense, the main research topics are to: a) convert biomass/industrial side-streams/waste materials into value-added materials; b) advance in the basic knowledge on structure-property relationships; and c) study the interaction of the developed materials with external environmental conditions to monitor both the impact of the materials on the surrounding environment and their degradation due to the external conditions.
