Designing new materials can be very time consuming and expensive due to the experimental testing involved. Some of the experiments could be replaced by computer simulations (virtual design). We have constructed stochastic models for different types of material structures which can then be used to simulate material structures virtually. I will give some examples of such models for porous, fiber and gel structures. By changing the model parameters, different structures can easily be created and the desired properties, for example mass transport properties, checked.

Aila Särkkä

Aila Särkkä is Professor in Mathematical Statistics at Chalmers University of Technology. She obtained her Ph.D. in Statistics at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland and was postdoc at INRA in Avignon, France, and at the University of Western Australia in Perth. Before starting at Chalmers in 1998, she worked a couple of years as Assistant Professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Gothenburg. She has had visiting positions at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and at the University of Washington in Seattle. Her main research area is spatial statistics and she is currently a member of the editorial board of the journal Spatial statistics. In 2014-2019, she led the SSF funded project Material structures seen through microscopes and statistics, which combined advanced microscopy with quantitative image analysis and spatial statistics to provide tools for the analysis of the microstructure of soft materials.
