Small Ammonia Heat Pump with variable speed compressor

Small Ammonia Heat Pump with variable speed compressor

Since the early stages of the refrigeration industry, ammonia has been used as refrigerant; however, its usage has been limited to larger systems since the introduction of halocarbons. Ammonia, thanks to its negligible global warming potential and favorable thermodynamic properties, is considered as an alternative for synthetic refrigerants in smaller systems again.

In this project an ammonia heat pump with variable speed compressor is designed to provide domestic hot water at 60 °C and heat for hydronic system at 40 °C. The heating capacity, the compact design (60×60 cm2) , and the favorable performance of the heat pump make it suitable for space heating and tap water heating of single-family houses. The heat pump operates well with refrigerant charge of less than 200 grams.
