Postdoktor i mekaniskt beteende hos komplexa mikrostrukturer i metaller

KTH Royal Institute of Technology, School of Industrial Engineering and Management

Job description

At the Hultgren Laboratory at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering we are offering a postdoctoral researcher position in experimental multi-scale mechanical behavior of complex microstructures in metallic materials. Mechanical testing over various microstructural length scales is critical for fundamental understanding of the deformation behavior of materials, as well as development of novel materials and calibration and validation of numerical models. Understanding the strain-stress evolution at grain/phase boundaries and its translation to macro mechanical behavior of metallic materials can be the next step in designing new materials, microstructures, and processes. Therefore, this position mainly focuses on supporting current activities around understanding the structure-property relations in complex multi-phase microstructures in metallic materials, including conventional and additively manufactured microstructures via development and implementation of advanced in-situ/ex-situ mechanical characterization methods, including tensile testing and micro-mechanical testing, e.g. micropillars, nanoindentation etc.

The position should be interesting for researchers with interest in further expanding their capabilities in mechanical metallurgy and microscopy and characterization of AM built materials. In addition, the postdoc will have the opportunity to strengthen their knowledge through close collaboration with companies and large-scale infrastructures in several interesting ongoing projects. In addition, the position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to advancing materials design in AM by exploring innovative alloys and enhancing process-material relationships through advanced computational and experimental approaches and contributing to the EU-funded REPAM project with a vast diverse consortium of universities, institutes, and industries.

Responsibilities:

  • Supporting ongoing activities on characterization of mechanical behavior of alloys with complex microstructures
  • Investigate process-structure-property relationships in AM materials, linking processing/manufacturing history to microstructure and performance.
  • Collaborate on experimental validation of computational models using state-of-the-art characterization techniques.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree in materials science, experimental physics, mechanical engineering, or closely-related area for the proposed research. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
  • Research experience in mechanical metallurgy proven by a track record of high impact journal publications and international conference presentations.
  • Experience with characterization of mechanical behavior of metallic materials, e.g. macro/micro- tensile testing, in-situ micromechanical testing, nanoindentation.
  • Research experience in microstructural characterization e.g., SEM, TEM, EBSD.
  • The ability to express yourself very well in English, spoken and written, as this will be required in day-to-day work
  • You are self-motivated with a strong ability to take initiative and run projects
  • Awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with specific focus on gender equality

Preferred qualifications

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline
  • Knowledge and experience in micro-mechanical modelling, e.g. CPFEM, is highly meritorious.
  • Experience with dual beam (FIB-SEM) systems, is preferred.

As a person, you have well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills and like to take responsibility. You have strong collaboration skills including the ability to lead and to support research.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.
