I will report on recent joint work with Vadim Alekseev, concerning group rings with a unique C*-completion. It is easy to see that any locally finite group satisfies this property, and utilizing the so-called Atiyah conjecture we provide some partial evidence for the converse statement. I will strive to explain the various terminology along the way in order
to make the talk as broadly accessible as possible.
