Abstract:

(English) This thesis is an introduction to the combinatorial theory of integer partitions. An integer partition is a division of a positive integer into smaller parts, and the sum of the smaller parts becomes the original integer. This essay begins with a short historical description focusing on, among others, the mathematician Leonhard Euler. Ferrers diagrams are a helpful way to visualize partitions graphically. In this essay, we use Ferrers diagrams to deal with, mainly the partition function and partition identities. Above all, we will present and prove Euler’s pentagonal theorem and show how to derive a recursive formula for the partition numbers using it.
