Abstract

After recalling some basic facts from linear systems theory, we consider a physically motivated class of systems called port-Hamiltonian (pH) systems. This class provides a Hamiltonian describing the energy of the system as well as ports allowing for system interconnections within the pH class.

First, we compare pH systems with the well studied classes of passive and positive real systems and highlight some advantages of pH modeling.

In the second part of this talk we consider extensions to differential-algebraic pH systems which incorporate additional algebraic constraints coming e.g. from conservation laws. Here we present a unifying modeling approach based on linear relations and we derive structural properties of the solutions from structural assumptions on the relations.
