Abstract:

Mapping class groups have been a motivating example in topology and infinite group theory since Dehn. In recent years and with the advent of geometric group theory, there has been a lot of effort to understand what kind of nonpositive curvature properties they have. This talk will describe some of the background to these efforts and discuss some recent results.
