Abstract

In this talk I will discuss the behavior of immersions of surfaces into three dimensional manifolds which minimize Willmore energy subject to an area constraint. This problem is equivalent to maximizing the Riemannian Hawking mass under the same constraint. Of particular interest is the interaction of these minimizers with the ambient geometry, most importantly the scalar curvature of the target manifold.
I will also talk about generalizations to other related functionals such as the space-time Hawking mass.
Many of the results discussed are joint work with Alexander Friedrich, Tobias Lamm and Felix Schulze.
