Abstract
In algebraic statistics, algebraic degrees measure the complexity of an optimization problem, and they are a good indicator of the running time needed to solve such a problem exactly. I will report on recent applications of topology and algebraic geometry to the calculation of various algebraic degrees of optimization. Based on joint work with J. Rodriguez, B. Wang and L. Wu.
