Abstract:

In incompressible flow, adding a scalar potential should only affect the pressure, not the velocity — a property known as pressure robustness. Many standard mixed finite element pairs, such as Taylor-Hood elements, may fail to achieve this, as these discretizations do not satisfy the divergence constraint in a sufficiently strong way. In this talk, I will introduce an unfitted finite element method for the Stokes equations that ensures pointwise divergence-free velocity fields and discuss its implications for pressure robustness.
