FLRW models are important but simple cosmological models; they are mathematically tractable due to their isotropy and spatially homogeneity. The Bianchi spacetimes form a major first step away from these features as they allow for anisotropy but are still spatially homogeneous. Coupled to fluid matter, they can be used to model various evolutionary stages of an anisotropic universe.

In this talk I will introduce Bianchi spacetimes, and their role as cosmological models. Using the orthonormal frame formalism, and after expansion-normalizing, we will see the elegant form Einstein's field equations take in them. Moreover, we shall see how Bianchi type VI_0 spacetimes with perfect fluid matter fit into this picture, and the nature of their initial singularities.

Lastly, if time permits, I will present a summary of the proof of my result.
