Mechatronics Masters Student recognized by IEEE
Mechatronics MSc Student Wim Devesse recently won the Best Student Conference Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE), for his paper "A real-time optimal control method for swing-free tower crane motions".
Judges made the award based on the quality of Wim´s presentation at the 9th annual IEEE CASE Conference, sponsored by the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS), which took place in Madison, Wisconsin, USA this August. The paper was also assessed on its originality, innovation, depth, quality and significance in automation science and engineering.
- I´d really like to thank all those at ABB Corporate Research in Västerås, who were so supportive during my thesis work - especially my industrial supervisor, Marcus Ramteen, says Wim Devesse. He is now studying for his Ph.D. at the Vrije Universiteit in Brussels.

Since 2007, CASE has recognized promising student authors for their contribution to ”the notable advancement in automation research: abstractions, algorithms, theory, methodologies and models that improve efficiency, productivity, quality and reliability of machines and systems operating in structured environments over extended periods, or that improve the explicit structuring of environments where machines and systems operate”.
This is the second consecutive year that one of Lei Feng´s exjobb students has won it! The four authors – Wim Devesse, Marcus Ramteen, Lei Feng and Jan Wikander – received a shared prize of 1 000 USD and were each awarded certificates from the IEEE.
