Higher Seminar: “Colonialism and Antarctic Animals”

Managing people and managing animals has often gone hand in hand within colonial regimes. Caribou in Canada, tigers in India, and other examples all speak to a concern for exercising authority over people by exercising authority over animals. The disruption by colonial invaders of existing relationships between animals and Indigenous peoples may fairly be considered part of the wider colonial project of restructuring power relations in the image of the colonizer. But given the absence of an Indigenous population, is it still possible to talk about human-animal relationships in Antarctica as inflected by colonialism?
