Monograph dissertations have, for many years, been the default for most history and history of science, technology and environment students. However, over the past decade, more PhD students and their supervisors have had to actively discuss and choose formats, a choice with several implications, practical as well as intellectual.

During this seminar, we will discuss how the monograph and compilation dissertations evolved within the humanities and history in Sweden in general, where there is an ongoing debate about the format in subject journals. Turning to the Division, we will look at the formal guidelines, as well as our experience with how this has been applied by our PhDs. What goes into choosing a dissertation format? What are the pros and cons? How do you choose? We will also take an international perspective, since it is a format that is still relatively uncommon in the humanities in the UK and the US, for example.

By attending this seminar you agree that we may use the discussions – with credit – in our work towards an article on the issue.
