CLIMATE CHANGE, POLICY, AND THE HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

What contribution can the Humanities and Social Sciences make to developing climate change policies? What can Australia learn from Europe? Come and hear Professor Sverker Sörlin from KTH Stockholm talking about his work with the Swedish Climate Policy Council, followed by a panel of leading Australian scholars: Prof Libby Robin (ANU), A/Prof Peter Christoff (UniMelb) and A/Prof Lauren Rickards (RMIT) as they discuss Australian developments. The event will be chaired by Prof Katie Holmes, Director of the CSI.

SPEAKERS
Prof Sverker Sörlin is Professor of Environmental History at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, and a passionate advocate for the contribution humanities and social sciences can make to our understandings of climate change. He is a member of the increasingly influential Climate Policy Council in Sweden.

Emeritus Prof Libby Robin is an historian of science and environmental ideas. has published widely in the history of science, international and comparative environmental history and the ecological humanities. An award-winning author, her most recent work is The Environment: A History (2018), co-authored with Sverker Suorlin and Paul Warde. Libby has also had extensive experience working in the museum sector.

A/Prof Peter Christoff teaches and researches climate politics and policy in the Department of Resource Management and Geography. He is a member of the Victorian Ministerial Reference Council on Climate Change Adaptation, and member of the Board of the Australian Conservation Foundation. He is Chair of the Board of ClimArte.

A/Prof Lauren Rickards is an Associate Professor in Global, Urban and Social Studies at RMIT University, where she co-leads the Climate Change Transformations Research Program in the Centre for Urban Research. Lauren’s research focuses on climate change responses and especially the interface with sustainability, land and rural issues. Lauren is a Lead Author with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Prof Katie Holmes is an environmental historian and Director of the Centre for the Study of the Inland. Her work integrates environmental, oral and gender history, and seeks to understand the experience of Australian settlement. Her most recent book is the just published co-authored Mallee Country: Land, People, History (Monash University Publishing).
