Scripps Science Policy Discussion Group: Science Advice - Experiences from Sweden

The research done at Scripps Institution of Oceanography is inexorably linked to society, and has the potential to set the foundation for policies proposed by our leaders and decision makers. The Scripps Science Policy Discussion Group aims to engage students, staff, and faculty at SIO and UC San Diego in meaningful conversation about science policy and the intersection of science and policy. Fostering these discussions in our research community will allow us to bridge the gap between research and policy decisions, as well as providing inspiring new paradigms for our current work. This week, our discussion lead will be Dr. Sverker Sörlin. The discussion topic will be “Science Advice - Experiences from Sweden”Sverker Sörlin, an historian of science and environment at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, has during his entire career served as an advisor to governments and an evaluator of scientific organizations and of policy initiatives in Sweden and other countries. He has been a member of the Swedish Science Advisory Board, of the Board of Environmental Research, and is now also a member of the newly installed Climate Policy Council with the unique mandate to evaluate the Swedish government’s work in all policy areas in relation to the goal of a net zero carbon emission in Sweden in 2045, which is Swedish law since 1 January 2018. He is an expert of the history and politics of science based advise and the public roles of expertise and has a new book entitled The Environment—a History (co-authored with Paul Warde, Cambridge, and Libby Robin, ANU), forthcoming later this year with Johns Hopkins University Press.
