About me

I hold a doctorate in anthropology [Candidate of Sciences, Kunstkamera, St. Petersburg] and work on my second Ph.D. in History of Science/Environmental History at the Division of History of Science, Technology and Environment, KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm). I am also an Associate Research Fellow at the Department of Siberian Ethnography at Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) in Saint Petersburg, Russia and Honorary Research Fellow at the Department of Anthropology, University of Aberdeen, U.K.

My current doctorate is funded by the GRETPOL project (ERC, PI Peder Roberts). In my project, I focus on transnational histories of indigenous and academic environmental knowledge in the Russian Arctic. Being trained both as historian and anthropologist I am applying various methods in my research, from the content analysis of archival documents to collaborative ethnographies with local communities in the Russian Arctic (Nenets predominantly).

I am also interested in visual anthropology and the history of visual documentation of indigenous peoples of the Russian Empire, Soviet Union and modern Russia in a comparative circumpolar perspective. I am the author of the film Samoyedic Diary (in Russian and Nenets) which is based on the footage of early-Soviet ethnographers Georgii and Ekaterina Prokofiev made among Nenets at the end of the 1920s. Recently I have finished up working on the film about Nenets seal hunting entitled Look at the Eyes of the Seal which Maria Amelina (a Russian linguist) and I shot on Kolguev island.

I am publishing in English, Russian and French. Books and special issues:
