Jan Hietala

About me

Jan Hietala was born 1962 in Stockholm, grew up partly in West Stockholm (Järfälla) and on the countryside in Finland. Hietala is a Norra Latin Gymnasium (A-Levels) graduate with a mayor in social sciences and arts. He went to The Dep. if Fine Arts (MFA), and The School of Architecture (Post Grad.) both at The Royal Academy of Fine Arts Stockholm, and later to the Dep. of Visual Cultures Goldsmiths University of London. Hietala is at present conducting a PhD research at the Dep. of Critical Studies in Architecture, School of Architecture and the Built Environment, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm.

 

Hietala is an artist, architect theorician, and a university tutor. He counts some thirty solo exhibitions and about the same amount group shows, to his resume. Hietala has represented Sweden at international shows three times and Finland once. He has some ten essays published both in Sweden and abroad, and an article recently published in the Swedish daily morning paper Dagens Nyheter on the topic infrastructure for the next 50 years in the Stockholm-region. Hietala is a holder of the Swedish Arts Grants Committee’s ten-year grant for the arts.
