About me

When you have worked as long as I have in industrial engineering, you find it hard to know where to begin...It all started in 1986 at the University of Sussex where I was working on tactile sensors for robots. I then got a chance to work for Prof. Anders Arnström here at KTH. It was 1987 and in the next few years the professor and his team developed a series of ground-breaking automation solutions. This made me stay on and I have covered most areas of automation, from developing sensors, applying mobile vision systems, to developing task-level programming languages for robots. The next steps involved control systems for assembly and through 5 European projects we developed the Evolvable Production Systems paradigm. I have been blessed with excellent teams and this has brought us several awards, including the Japan Robotics Association award, Outstanding Journal article of the year, FP7 Success Story, Emerald Literati Prize, as well as over 10 European Commission projects (written by me!). I am now Head of the Department and our new management group is aiming at moving the department into a new era of development, encouraging young researchers to take the lead. I usually use two mottos: "if my students do not turn out better engineers than me, I have failed", and "if you like doing things like everyone else, don't get into research. We try to break rules, not follow them!".
