About me

Dr Cem Örnek studied Surface Engineering and Materials Science (BSc) at Aalen University of Applied Sciences in Germany, located at the Eastern Alpes, where he graduated in 2011 with first mark.

He then joined the Corrosion and Protection Centre and Materials and Performance Centre and Research Centre for Radwaste and Decommissioning at the University of Manchester, and has completed his PhD studies on the Performance Characterisation of Duplex Stainless Steel in Nuclear Waste Storage Environment in 2015. The main focus of his PhD was to better understand atmospheric-induced stress corrosion cracking and hydrogen embrittlement in atmospheric environment, with thorough microstructure characterisation.

Dr Örnek then continued his research in Manchester as a post-doctoral research associate (PDRA) in atmospheric and localised corrosion studies on aluminium alloy and irradiation-assisted microstructure damage on austenitic stainless steel PWR cladding material.

In 2016, Cem joined the Division of Surface and Corrosion Science at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and is currently doing state-of-the-art in-situ surface science and microstructure characterisation studies on different advanced materials. Special focus of the research is on the formation and degradation of surface oxide passive films of primarily stainless steels with further interest about the effects of hydrogen and strain. The aim is to achieve a mechanistic understand of the initiation of localised corrosion and/or corrosion-related mechanical failure of the passive film with the early stages of corrosion/cracking propagation (hydrogen embrittlement and stress corrosion cracking).

The Last seven years, Cem has achieved deep understanding in materials and corrosion and has gained valuable knowledge about materials microstructure and corrosion performance with special focus on (duplex) stainless steels and aluminium alloys.

Cem is strongly enthusiastic, self-motivated, open-minded, and always welcomes and appreciates new and challenging opportunities.
