About me

Manfred Partl is former Gästprofessor and now Adjunct Professor at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and teaching at ETHZ Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. He is Director of the Road Engineering/Sealing Components Laboratory at Empa Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Switzerland). He is also Adjunct research professor at Carleton University, Ottawa.

During his formation and professional career (8 years of which in private industry) he has worked on wood, polymers, fiber cement and bituminous materials. His special interest focuses on mechanical and physical properties and characterization of bituminous materials and systems with respect to innovative sustainable development and multi-functionality of road pavements.

He has served Rilem (International Union of Materials and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures) for many years as cluster convener, member of TAC (Technical Advisory Committee) and DAC (Development Advisory Committee) as well as chair of different Technical Committees (e.g. until 2017 chair of TC 237-SIB, Testing and Characterization of Sustainable Innovative Bituminous Materials and Systems). Since 2003 he is Rilem Fellow and in 2017 Rilem he was awarded Rilem Honorary Member. He is former president of ISAP (International Society for Asphalt Pavements) and also chair of ISAP TC APE on Asphalt Pavements and Environment.

He is member of the board of VSS (Swiss Association of Road and Traffic Experts) and member of the international VSS Science Council. He is also Certified Expert ISO 17024/SEC 03.1; Partl Manfred N., Cert Nr. 0063. In the name of SAS (Swiss accreditation Service), he is also acting as technical expert for the accreditation of labs.

He is lecturing at KTH on Advanced Rheology of Bituminous Materials and on Bridges & Dynamic Modulus; at ETHZ on Bituminous Materials and at technical School in Pfäffikon Switzerland on Building Materials. He is and was supervising and co-supervising different PhD students at KTH and at other universities such as EPFL-Lausanne, ETHZ-Zurich, Carleton-Ottawa, Rosario-Argentina, Universita delle Marche-Ancona. He has authored and co-authored numerous scientific papers (see link on this webpage) and is associate editor of RMPD (Int. J. of Road Materials & Pavement Design) as well as Materials and Structures.

He was actively involved as conference chair or co-chair inthe organization of several international conferences, such as EATA 2015, KTH, Stockholm, Sweden, and EATA 2017, Empa, Dübendorf, Switzerland (EATA European Asphalt Technology Association). Latest committment is his conference chairmanship for the the 4th International Symposium on Asphalt pavements ISAP-APE  20th, 21st November 2017 in Tokyo (see link on the right side)
