My challenge is trying to create lignin-based materials. Lignin is found in the cell wall of some plant cells. It is the most abundant natural source of aromatic structures and for this reason the research on this biopolymer is increasing in order to replace existing aromatic petroleum-based materials.
My project on lignin modification is then splitted in these following steps:
1. Microwave assisted extraction in order to obtain Lignin fractions through the using of green solvents.
2. The isolated fraction will be then functionalized to form resins.
3. The functionalized lignin will be afterwards evaluated as a thermosetting polymer using UV curing technique.
Thermosetting resin polymers are reticulated polymers forming a very hard and fragile material. Their mechanical properties make them resistant to heat and for this reason they are used like coating or adhesives or for electrical insulation and so on.
