Using rail vehicle dynamics for system cost analysis
Railways are an integrated transport mode, where all the different subsystems such as vehicle, track or operation are interconnected and dependent on each other. This makes most subsystem analyses incomplete or isolated, considering the subsystem interaction as boundary conditions for the problem in hand. But for vehicle-track interaction analyses, this interface becomes extremely important. In this context, Rail Vehicle Dynamics calculations are a useful tool to study track friendliness of both existing and future vehicle models. Historically, dynamic wheel-rail contact forces have been used as a proxy for wheel and track damage, which has evolved into more advance models which consider the energy dissipated in the wheel-rail contact, or engineering models that map damage against variables directly correlated to it.
The lecture will present existing wheel rail contact damage prediction models and the improvements towards a faster, more simple and more precise tools, shifting to more general subsystem interaction challenges and finally presenting intersectional aspects of cost modelling for railway system cost analyses and the challenges of building a systematic and scientific global cost analysis methodology.
