Scope of Activities

The research and education in Flight Dynamics is focused on the multidiscplinary aspects of flight. Research projects often concern aeroservoelasticity, where the interaction of aerodynamic forces with a flexible structure and a control system is the main interest.


To investigate problems and opportunities associated with aeroservoelasticity, numerical methods are developed and employed to solve cases with industrial complexity. Recent activities include work on robust methods for the solution of the flutter problem, computationally efficient methods for unsteady aerodynamics, and optimization approaches for the minimization of the drag of flexible aircraft. Furthermore, a number of projects involve optimization of flight trajectories with respect to diverse objectives such as reduced emissions or minimal radar detection range.

Ongoing research projects

Experiments are an indispensable component of most projects conducted at the division. Wind tunnel measurements are used where computational methods are suspected to be insufficient or too costly to apply, such as for investigations of the control surface effectiveness of tailless aircraft. On the other hand, specialized experiments can yield very useful data for the validation of numerical procedures in aeroelasticity.

teachers of the Flight Dynamics Division are responsible for the courses "Rocket Science", "Flight Mechanics", "Experimental Aerodynamics" and "Aeroelasticity". As far as possible, course work involves experimental activities such as student-conducted wind tunnel testing. All of the courses are part of the international Master of Science program in Aerospace Engineering.
