Workshop: Designing Learning Amongst Complexity and Mobility (DL2.0)

Motivation and objectives:

Design for learning in the complex, connected and mobile world is not currently based on appropriate and logical foundations. It confuses the design of educational artifact with the design of educational activities, and does not empower the learners, rather it preserves the dominance of education professionals. The current practices for designing learning also do not recognise the facts that increased familiarity, access and ownership in the wider world with personal digital technologies, specifically mobile devices and tablets, make profound differences to how knowledge, understanding, ideas, information and images can be created, owned, shared, discussed, consumes and transformed, and to the control and locus of learning.

There are mistakes inherited from institutional e-learning where artefacts and activities were more likely to be synonymous and the confusion was historically harmless. Design had become the prerogative of e-learning experts cut off from the rapidly changing mobile and connected world.

This session sets out how designing for learning must now be different from design of e-learning. The factors, constraints and opportunities that now impact on the design of learning include observations about:

  • Learners live in an abundance of digital resources from which we learn.

  • Learning forms only a small fraction of the totality of learners' experience and expectation of digital technology.

  • The impact of digital technology on the nature of learning, finding out, knowledge and knowing.

The workshop will work with structures, practices and heuristics designed to help design learning experiences aligned to the experiences and expectations of their learners. 

The main question for this workshop is  How should we develop courses for today?

Target participants:

The workshop is designed for an expert edtech research audience. The methods embrace the principles of heutagogy, mobile learning, curation and the flipped classroom.

After a series of workshops with teachers and lecturers at universities around the world, we are hoping this workshop with experienced TEL researchers will explore questions such as, in your experience of designing courses:

  1. How were learners involved? How did you address the potential diversity of their experiences, expectations, practices and backgrounds? Did you use personae, use cases or other ways of abstractly expressing diversity?
  1. How did you ensure quality, equity and maintainability?
  1. Was there a tension or an alignment between institutional ideas and practices around educational technology and learners’ assumptions about digital technology based on their social, personal and recreational habits?
  1. What were the drivers, pressures and constraints operating on your design and on your design process?
  1. How would you characterise your design process, for example, linear, structured, incremental, iterative?
  1. How did you capture, represent and communicate your design and the design process?
  1. What are the transferable lessons from your course design and development processes and practices?

Call for Participation

The DL2.0 workshop is now accepting one to two-pages papers, outlining interest in taking part in the workshop and knowledge/expertise in the space.
Selection uses a single-blind procedure, where all position statement submissions will be reviewed by at least two workshop committee members, and will be assessed based on their potential to contribute to the workshop. 

Papers should be submitted in pdf format to or no later than 8th of July midnight 11:59pm UTC-12, 2018. 


The workshop will benefit attendees in the following ways:

  • Critical re-appraisal of the role of teaching and designing
  • Critical appraisal of the alignment of learning and the learners’ world
  • Practical heuristics and guidelines for design and development
