Student Seminar: Urban Climate Action in a Volatile World - How Can Researchers Plug In?
Bridging mitigation, adaptation, and a just transition
Cities account for over 70% of global emissions and face growing exposure to climate impacts — yet plans for mitigation and adaptation remain largely separate. How do city planners keep interconnected goals in view, especially against a backdrop of geopolitical uncertainty and polycrisis?
This seminar is part of an ongoing scoping study on Anticipatory Cities - seeding a new research nexus across disciplines, geographies, and institutions. We welcome all KTH students to join us for this seminar to explore where research can make a difference!

Since December 2025, a multidisciplinary group of researchers from KTH, Stockholm University (SU), and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) has been working to explore this space. Through an extensive reading club, the group has reviewed 15 core papers and related literature on anticipatory approaches to urban climate action under conditions of systemic risk, deep uncertainty, and polycrisis — including the first-order draft of the upcoming IPCC Special Report on Cities. The group has also piloted a masters thesis mini-school using novel anticipatory methods.
At this seminar, we will share what we have learned to date and discuss how students and early-career researchers can connect to this emerging research nexus.
The seminar topics include:
-
How city planners can hold mitigation, adaptation, and just transition goals together
-
Anticipatory approaches for urban planning under deep uncertainty and polycrisis
-
The role of North–South city networks in addressing shared climate goals
-
Learnings from the Masters students thesis projects
Fika and Refreshments will be provided!
