Course contents
Exercises in comprehension and conversation in German, including practical pronunciation and intonation exercises. Training to make oral summaries in German of texts of a general and specialised nature. German for meetings and interviews. Studies of texts of a general and technical nature and exercises to make summaries and comments on the texts' content. Exercises in writing short reports, letters, applications etc.
Intended learning outcomes
The expected learning outcomes for the course correspond mainly to levels B1/B2 of CEFR, the Common European Framework of Reference for Language.
On completion of the course, and in addition to what is expected in lower-level courses, students should be able to:
Listening comprehension
- understand the contents of clear standard speech about general subject matters (B2)
Reading comprehension
- understand and comment on authentic texts that deal with topical matters in technology-related subjects and working life (B2)
Speech and interaction
- discuss and informally debate either subjects of either personal interest or those linked to their studies, work or current events (B1)
- summarise texts of a general and/or technical nature (B1/B2)
- deliver an individual prepared presentation of a specialised nature (B1/B2)
Writing
- summarise texts of a general and/or technical nature (B1/B2)
- write a factual report or a discursive/ critical essay (B1/B2)

Specific prerequisites
General entry requirements. Completed and passed German A2 - or equivalent proficiency as proven in the compulsory placement test (to be taken before choosing the course).

Examination and completion
If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

- DELA - Assignment, 1.5 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
- KONA - Assessment, 1.5 credits, grading scale: P, F
- TENA - Oral Language Proficiency, 3.0 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
- TENB - Written Language Proficiency, 3.0 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.
The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

Opportunity to complete the requirements via supplementary examination
