Joint work with C. Garban. \(U(1)\) lattice gauge theory is the statistical physics model in \(\mathbb{Z}^4\) that is relevant to the study of quantum-electrodynamics. Mathematically, it is a model of random angles living on the edges of \(\mathbb{Z}^4\) with gauge invariance. In this talk, I will explain how to recognize the topological defects of this model. They are defects of this model coming from the fact that the angles live in \((-\pi,\pi)\) and not in \(\mathbb{R}\). Furthermore, I will show that these vortices have a macroscopic effect for any inverse-temperature beta.
