Abstract: The long history of continued fractions extends thousands of years back in time. Like most mathematical discoveries it is not easy to give a full account of their beginnings. What we know for certain is that their real breakthrough would not come until the second half of the 16th century with a growing popularity during the 17th century. Several well-known mathematicians have been of great importance for their development, including Leonard Euler, Johan Lambert and Joseph Louis Lagrange. In this thesis we will treat simple continued fractions and their connection to the real numbers. Some of the important properties of continued fractions are formulated, proved, and exemplified. As an application continued fractions will be used to solve Pell's equation.
