Title: Cloud File System Security and Dependability with SafeCloud-FS

Abstract

File storage is one of the most successful use cases for cloud computing. Services like Dropbox, Google Drive, Amazon S3, and Apple iCloud Drive are widely used worldwide to store both personal and professional data. However, there are reasonable concerns about the security and dependability of data stored in such services, with frequent news about outages, espionage, and file corruption. This talk is about SafeCloud-FS, a secure cloud-backed file system. SafeCloud-FS provides a POSIX interface and stores files in a set of clouds – in a cloud-of-clouds – in such a way that the files’ integrity and availability are guaranteed even if some clouds are compromised. The file system stores both the files and their metadata encrypted for confidentiality and privacy. It provides also a mechanism to audit if the files are actually stored and not modified in the clouds without the need to download the files, which may be costly. This mechanism provides a second layer of integrity and availability.

Bio

Miguel Correia is an Associate Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) of Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa), in Lisboa, Portugal. He is a senior researcher at INESC-ID in the Distributed Systems Group (GSD). He has been involved in several international and national research projects related to cybersecurity, including the SafeCloud, PCAS, TCLOUDS, ReSIST, CRUTIAL, and MAFTIA European projects. He has more than 100 publications and is Senior Member of the IEEE. His main research interests are: cyber-security, cloud computing, software security, big data analytics for security, blockchain and distributed ledgers, critical infrastructure protection, machine learning for security, intrusion tolerance, mobile security, and distributed systems.
